The Codes of Gender

Just found this documentary via a friend of mine. It's about how advertisement is based on our cultural believes and moralities, and how we define what gender is, when we find a woman feminine and a male masculine. As Jhally concludes in the end of the film:

"All images are authored by someone, and it is up to us whether we participate passively in the world that is created for us by meekly excepting the ideas behind them and reinforcing them trough our silence of whether we choose to engage the world, actively, by recognizing what is happening and not reinforce it. Question it, point out how strange normality can actually be."

The invisible bookshelf

Ok, maybe you've already read about it but if you haven't than now is the time, the invisible bookshelf. I'm still deciding if I would like to have one above my bed (in a small room like mine Í want one to many things...) but I wouldn't hide the idea from anyone else!

Found it here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Invisible-Book-Shelf/

Also take a look at the reactions, you get a better idea of how it should look like.

Planthair

Still bored after reading my blog? IMPOSSIBLE. But if you really want something creative to do on your lazy Sunday afternoon you could make these pots, or order them at GOOD in Kazakhstan. I don't have a printer so can't make them pots today but if I had one I WOULD (if I wasn't this tired like I am now).

Budget cuts in Dutch arts & culture

The dutch government is going to cut down the arts and culture budget, for example taking the 6% tax that is on tickets for festivals and other cultural events up to 19%. Last night there was a protest march in The Hague but I don't think it will help in any way. Above an infographic of Mediamatics about the costs that arts give in relationship to other things we Dutch (well, the government) like to spend our money at.

De Ambachtsmarkt in Soest

Went to our annual market today, awfully busy but nice to see all the people with the traditional Dutch clothes on. It was all about the old dutch craft work.  Even got to see the famous dutch klompendans! Hard to imagine, but the wooden shoes are pretty handy.
